Welcome to Destination Abergavenny,

I am very pleased to showcase what I believe to be the very best that Abergavenny has to offer. This isn't a commercial site, nor is it here to sell you anything. Its purpose is, I hope, to inspire you to visit our beautiful market town and experience the delights that it has to offer.

Known as the Gateway to Wales and nestled on the edge of the Black Mountains,
Abergavenny boasts some of the finest shops, restaurants and hotels you will find anywhere in the UK.

Many of the retailers and proprietors here have been perfecting their products and services for more than three decades and so, I am sure, that as you browse this site, you will come to agree that Abergavenny has got to be your destination in the near future. Enjoy the site.
Kind Regards,
Steve Davies

The stars of new film Resistance hit the red carpet on Monday night here in Abergavenny for the welsh premiere. HRH The Prince of Wales attended after a visit to the Six Bells Miners’ memorial and a trip to a Monmouthshire brewery. In true welsh fashion it was raining, but despite this a crowd of 100 people still turned up outside of Baker Street Cinema to catch a glimpse of the Prince.

Speaking to Mrs. Sheers, Owen’s mother, and a long time customer at Homes of Elegance she described how the premiere turned into a royal event. Whilst Owen was writing out in New York he met the Prince of Wales’ private secretary who coordinated the Prince to attend.

The Prince was joined on the red carpet by up and coming stars of the film Andrea Riseborough, Tom Wlaschia and Kimberley Nixon. Unfortunately co-star Michael Sheen could not make the event.

The film, based on a book by Owen Sheers who grew up locally, was filmed in the area. The film focuses on the uneasy means of survival open to the women who were left behind when the men fled to the valleys to fight in the Second World War. The film describes a fictional past that could have once been our future if Britain hadn’t managed to keep Hitler out.

Owen’s inspiration for the story were the true stories that he heard of men in the area disappearing in the night to be trained up for Winston Churchill’s top secret Auxiliary Units.

Owen, who has just started rehearsals for a new play, The Two Worlds of Charlie F, likes to write about war but he admits that his first love is writing poetry. He’s been commissioned to write a long war poem to be broadcast on Radio 4 over five days next year.

The film is now showing at Baker Street Cinema and has inspired an exhibition at Abergavenny Museum until February 25th next year. Something not to be missed!
